Arsenal given hope over Barca defender

Arsenal have been given a boost in their pursuit of Barcelona defender Martin Montoya.

The Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is keen to replace Bacary Sagna should he leave the north London side with the Spanish 22-year-old said to be his first choice of replacement.

Montoya is coming to an end next summer in his contract with the Catalan side and it would seem that he is in no rush to renew as he is largely seen as a replacement in the Camp Nou’s defensive line-up. He recently stated to the Spanish press: “I am with the best team in the world and I am in no rush to sign.”

The statement though will also give hope to the likes of Liverpool, Inter Milan and Napoli who are also said to be keen on the player who has only made 33 appearances for the Blaugrana since his first team debut back in 2011 and only nine appearances this season.

Montoya though has been a regular selection in Spain’s Under-21 side and featured heavily in the side’s European Championship campaign that year, starting in all the matches with the team going on to win the tournament.
