Carrick: Man Utd must be more ruthless

Michael Carrick feels Manchester United need to be more ruthless in attack as they look to turn around a below-par start to the season.

David Moyes' side have won just one from four Premier League matches at Old Trafford this season and had to battle to a 1-0 victory against Real Sociedad in the Champions League on Wednesday.

United sit in eighth place, eight points behind league leaders Arsenal, and Carrick knows they need to start putting teams to the sword.

He told reporters: "We're creating chances and opportunities and the attacking lads are looking dangerous. It's just not falling for them at certain times.

"You're concerned more when you're not creating chances and the lads aren't getting opportunities, but with the quality that we have I think they'll start going in a lot more."

United have drawn at home against Chelsea and Southampton, and lost to Liverpool, West Brom and Manchester City.

Carick continued: "That's the frustrating thing. We've shown signs in certain games - moments when you think 'This is it, we're on the up' - and then in the next game, for some reason, it doesn't go how you'd expect.

"That's the challenge we face, really. We have to improve again on Saturday. It's tough.

"The Southampton game you can look at and say we really should have won. We were 1-0 up, we had chances to score more. Our keeper hasn't really had anything to do and then we go and concede from a corner, so you could say we could do with defending corners better.

"It's fine margins - little details.

"We've been good at getting on top of those things and seeing games out, and I am sure we'll do that in the games we have coming up."

Carrick has been impressed with Wayne Rooney this season and joked about the striker turning 28 on Thursday.

"He's getting on, isn't he?" he remarked. "I'm sure he's looking to improve, everyone can improve. Look at [Ryan] Giggsy [at 39], he's incredible - from not playing for a bit and then to finish the game [against Sociedad] like he did, it sets an example to everyone.

"Wayne, if he wants to, can carry on playing on for a long time yet. He's 28 and they say you're just getting into your peak around that age, at 30, 32, so I'm sure he's looking to improve, and he's playing well at the moment."

Asked if the striker is more focused than last season, Carrick added: "I don't know, to be honest. You can't question his focus at all, really.

"As players, you have good spells and spells where it doesn't quite go for you.

"He's having a great one at the moment, and I'm sure it will continue for a long time."
