Guardiola chasing Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey

Posted by TB  | No comments

The Bundesliga club’s boss, Pep Guardiola, tried to sign Ramsey, 23, while in charge at Barcelona and has maintained an interest in the stylish Wales international.

Rambo has enjoyed a standout season, scoring 15 goals in 33 games for the Gunners – including one against Bayern’s rivals Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

He was the driving force behind Arsenal’s fantastic start to the Premier League campaign but was injured in a win over West Ham on Boxing Day and was ruled out for three months.

Barcelona have also watched Ramsey in six games this season as the Spanish club start to assess how they will fill the gaps that will be left once Xavi, 34, and Andres Iniesta, 30, retire.

However, Ramsey feels a degree of loyalty to the Gunners because of the way they looked after him following the double leg fracture he sustained against Stoke in 2010.

Former Arsenal striker John Hartson said: “Ramsey will be linked with ten clubs in the summer but I can’t see him leaving Arsenal in the foreseeable future.

“He’s settled there and loves the club.”

Guardiola : My mistake cost Bayern

Posted by TB  | No comments

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola says he made a mistake in his side's Champions League semi-final loss to Real Madrid on Tuesday and apologised to the club's fans.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos struck braces in Real's 4-0 second-leg thrashing of the Bundesliga champions at the Allianz Arena, completing a 5-0 aggregate victory.

And Guardiola admitted it was his error that led to Bayern's humiliating defeat, but insisted it's impossible for the team to win every title.

"We played badly when we had the ball. That's my responsibility. I made a mistake," the Spaniard told reporters.

"I was wrong on some tactical issues. It’s my responsibility. When you don’t play well, these things happen against great rivals, but I’m disappointed.

"This team has to win everything so that people are happy. Sometime it’s not possible. I’m sorry for the disappointment of not playing well.

"Three years ago Bayern won zero titles in a season. If you win the league it may be enough but we knew that this year could only equal the past. We won’t but that’s the sport.

"Today there has been a team that has been better. I still have the impression we’ve had a good Champions League campaign but Real Madrid had the quality and the first-half won it for them."

"It’s difficult for me and my players. I’m still proud of them.

"The reason for the defeat isn’t related to the possession. Football is played with the ball and then there are other things.

"It was a bit better in the first-leg, but congratulations to Real Madrid."

Guardiola lamented his side's defending from set-pieces, with Ramos heading in a corner and free-kick in the first half.

Ronaldo netted on the counter-attack before half-time and completed the scoring with a cheeky free-kick which went under a jumping Bayern defensive wall.

"We have to carry on now. If you don't play well and you defend set-pieces badly, that's just how it is. You are being punished," Guardiola said.

"We are at the highest level in Europe; such mistakes are punished right away."

Guardiola said he had been hopeful Bayern could reproduce the performances they put in against Premier League sides Arsenal and Manchester United earlier in the knockout stages.

"What we did against Arsenal and Manchester [United] did not work today," he said.

"Also in the first-leg in Madrid we had more control than today and at least a couple of chances. Today, just a few. That's why we have lost the semi-final.

"You play with the ball and if you don't have it that doesn't work."

Not even Guardiola could solve the Barcelona crisis

Posted by TB  | No comments

Perhaps Pep Guardiola was right. Following four fantastic years in which he became Barcelona's most successful coach with 14 titles out of a possible 19 and a style of football envied throughout the world, the former club captain left his job. "I could no longer motivate the players," he said.

Guardiola knew exactly how he wanted to play and set about creating the greatest Barca side in history. Within his first 15 months, he had won it all. But less than two years after his departure, that team is now in disarray.

Badly beaten by Bayern Munich in last season's Champions League semi-finals, when they went down 7-0 on aggregate, Barca were forced to scrap their plan for continuity as Tito Vilanova suffered a relapse of his cancer in the summer.

The Barca board had been powerless to prevent Pep's departure, but picking Vilanova seemed like the next best thing. Instead of addressing the needs of the team, however, Barca were clinging desperately to past glories, papering over the cracks. In denial and in decline, the appointment of Vilanova vindicated president Sandro Rosell as the Catalans claimed La Liga with a joint-record 100 points, but behind the scenes, all was not well.

When Tito was forced to step down, the Barca board panicked again, this time picking Gerardo Martino as coach. The appointment of the Rosario native and former Newell's boss had nothing to do with Messi nor the wish to keep him happy, the club insisted. But as former Spain midfielder Albert Luque said during a debate on television: "Can you imagine Martino at Barca if Messi wasn't there? Impossible."

Like Vilanova, Martino started well and for a long time the Argentine coach enjoyed positive results, yet there was a lingering feeling that Barca were not completely convincing - even when they beat Manchester City in the Champions League and won 4-3 at the Bernabeu last month.

And so it proved as, within the space of one woeful week, Barca's season has imploded. The Champions League exit at Atletico was a shock, but more worrying still was the form of Messi and his partnership with summer signing Neymar and their failure to score, which was repeated on Sarurday in the Liga loss at Granada that leaves the Catalans virtually out of contention in the title race.

That saw Johan Cruyff call for the return of Guardiola as coach and the logic is there for all to see as Barca slipped to a third defeat in a row by losing to Madrid on Wednesday. "The best thing for Barcelona is for Guardiola to come back," the Dutchman said this week.

Would Pep have settled for Barca's insipid first-half performance at Mestalla? Not likely. Would he have allowed Dani Alves to make a video of himself singing and dancing and fooling around in club attire the night before the crucial Champions League clash at Atletico? No way. Would he have bought Alex Song as a solution to Barca's problems in central defence? It's hard to imagine.

One of Guardiola's conditions for staying at Barca was a revolutionary renewal of the playing staff, with several first-team members to be put up for sale. But Alves, Gerard Pique and Cesc Fabregas are all still at Camp Nou and Pep is not.

At Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson sold David Beckham because he considered the midfielder was focusing more on off-the-pitch activities than football. Guardiola fell out with Pique for the same reasons, while he grew digruntled with Alves' attitude (as Barca have this season) and was unhappy with Fabregas' commitment to the cause.

But on top of that, this is not the same squad which wowed the world between 2008 and 2011. Captain Carles Puyol is no longer good enough even for this team when there are injuries, when before he was one of the game's greatest defenders, while Xavi remains important but is also a fading force in his twilight years and committed players like Eric Abidal and Seydou Keita are no longer at the club.

Meanwhile, Messi has been injured, Neymar's signing seems to have rocked the boat with the Argentine and others at Camp Nou, and other sides are also now finding out how they can deactivate this team. Additionally, most of these players have won it all and are older now, while poor planning of the squad means there has been no evolution. And, as if that weren't enough, many of the first team seem to be conserving energies for the World Cup.

When he took over at Barca, Guardiola could see the potential in this golden generation and knew the seeds for success only needed planting and then nurturing for great growth to be achieved. He then saw the same at Bayern, where Heynckes' superb side were already the finest in Europe even before they won all their trophies last season.

But as he looks back with interest at Barca, Pep won't be seeing something similar right now at Camp Nou. So will he come back? One day, sure. Will that be soon? No - and why would he want to? With the Catalan club in such a state, a whole new project is needed, not to mention elections and a change at boardroom level. And all of that takes time, so as things stand, Guardiola is better off where he is and even if he did return, there would be no quick solution to the Catalans' crisis.

Guardiola: Defeat vs Manchester United is unthinkable

Posted by TB  | No comments

With their FC Hollywood swagger, Bayern Munich are not the sort of club you would associate with self-doubt and fragility, especially after a season of setting record-breaking benchmarks of excellence.

Yet for all that, there were a few hints of nervousness flitting around the Allianz Arena here as coach Pep Guardiola conceded that if Bayern fail to overcome Manchester United it would be too much to bear for Germany’s powerhouse champions.

“If we are not in the semi-finals, it is a huge mistake for us, for me, the new manager,” Guardiola conceded, with typical candour before resuming his quest to emulate the treble-winning season last year of predecessor Jupp Heynckes. “I know if we are not in the Champions League final, this club cannot deal with that. It’s very important me, for the team and I knew that before I came here. I knew right from the start that I have got to be in the situation so I can also get this treble. If I don’t do that, then, hey, it’s not so good! I have to accept this.”

In other words, Guardiola accepts that if Bayern slip he will be perceived to have failed, something to which he is not accustomed. Being the outstanding pass master he is, though, he is adamant that his side will find a way to breach the massed “eight or nine” man defence, which he is convinced will again be David Moyes’s modus operandi, and move ever closer to becoming the first team to defend successfully the Champions League.

Xavi: Barcelona miss Guardiola at times

Posted by TB  | No comments

Barcelona midfielder Xavi admits that the Catalan giants miss certain aspects of former head coach Pep Guardiola's football philosophy.

Guardiola enjoyed a trophy-laden four years at Camp Nou, during which his side secured three La Liga titles and two Champions League triumphs.

The 42-year-old departed the Spanish champions in 2012, taking a short sabbatical before joining Bundesliga holders Bayern Munich in the close-season.

And Xavi hailed the "extraordinary project" engineered by Guardiola during his time in Spain.

"Pep made his job in Barcelona. We are so proud he was our manager," he said. "(We had) four years when we won plenty of trophies. He led an extraordinary project until he decided to leave for a gap year and nowadays he is doing a brilliant job in Bayern Munich.

"Obviously, we miss things from him, as (we do) the other managers who left the club. We have another coach, we had [Tito] Vilanova last year and Tata [Gerardo] Martino this season.

"Each person has a different way to work. Guardiola had his way, Vilanova too and Martino as well. All of them are good managers and we were lucky with Guardiola because we made history."

Kroos: I never doubted my Bayern future

Posted by TB  | No comments

Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos has said that he never had any doubts that he would make it at the Allianz Arena.

The Germany international was linked with a move away from the club in the summer following the arrivals of Mario Gotze and Thiago Alcantara.

However, he has been an integral part of Pep Guardiola's starting XI this term and was always certain he would keep his place in the team.

"Of course I noticed what was said and there were many people of this opinion," he told TZ.

"But I was always sure and I had some conversations with really important people. Ultimately, though, it depends on what I show on the pitch. And that's why I was relaxed."

Kroos and Gotze have often featured together this term and Kroos is delighted with the impact the former Borussia Dortmund man has made.

"Mario is a fantastic footballer. I told him when he joined that we would have a lot of fun together. And that he would be a success with me and with Bayern," he continued.

Bayern take on Raja Casablanca on Saturday in the Club World Cup final and Kroos says 2013 has been an incredible year from him, despite injury ruling him out of the run-in to the Bavarians' treble.

"It was very positive! We have won everything there was to be won as a team. For me personally, I always played up until the phase of injury," he said.

"I've always had my place in the starting XI. That's why I'm very satisfied."

Guardiola: Bayern want perfect group stage

Posted by TB  | No comments

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola is determined to ensure that his side end their Champions League group stage campaign with six victories to their name.

The Bavarians have been in impressive form in Europe this term and although they were dominant in their 3-1 win away to Manchester City on matchday two, Guardiola is refusing to take Manuel Pellegrini's side lightly in Tuesday's reverse fixture.

"I've got lots of trust in this Bayern team, but tomorrow will be dangerous. City have unbelievable players," the 42-year-old told reporters.

"I hope we can win this game and end the group with six victories under our belt. If we train like we did today, then we'll have a great chance. We want to pick up 18 points for the first time in the club's history. It's a good goal to have.

"We can definitely improve. I don't like it when we lose the ball too easily."

Guardiola: Heynckes gave me a perfect team

Posted by TB  | No comments

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola has thanked Jupp Heynckes for leaving him with a perfect team when he left the club in the summer.

The Bavarian giants won an historic treble last term during Heynckes' last season as coach, and have made a flying start to the current campaign.

The 68-year-old has been rewarded with the prestigious Bambi Award, presented by his successor, who was in awe of his achievements over the last year.

“Bayern have you to thank for many trophies - but this trophy is for you alone,” Guardiola said.

“You're a magnificent colleague. You’re a legend in Germany, but every kid in Catalunya and Spain knows who you are as well. You are a huge role model to me, as an expert but also as a person.

“You picked the team up again, with your experience, courage and big heart. You were rewarded with the treble – and it’s your treble! You handed me a perfect team, and I can’t top your achievement.”

Heynckes said he was honoured to have won the award, which is given to those who have inspired people in Germany with their achievements.

"I’m extremely pleased Pep is here today. Receiving the Bambi award is a great honour for me and I’m delighted. If my mother could be here to see it, she would be very proud.

"Coaching Bayern is a privilege. And it was a privilege to take charge of this team.”

2 Bayern players to miss Hoffenheim clash

Posted by TB  | No comments

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola has revealed that he is unlikely to risk either Toni Kroos or Arjen Robben in Saturday's Bundesliga meeting with Hoffenheim.

Both players picked up minor hamstring injuries in last weekend's 3-2 win over Hertha Berlin but did return to full training on Thursday.

However, Guardiola does not want to rush either man back into action, given Bayern have a Champions League game against Viktoria Plzen to come on Tuesday.

"Toni is a bit further along than Arjen," the former Barcelona boss told reporters on Friday. "They both trained yesterday.

"Perhaps they are not fit tomorrow, but next Tuesday or next Saturday they will be fit."

Guardiola also admitted that the trip to Hoffenheim has also probably come a tad too soon for defender Dante, who has been struggling with an ankle problem.

"He has trained well, although there are still little problems," the Catalan coach explained.

Bayern's meeting with Hoffenheim at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena is scheduled to get under way at 15:30CET.

Xavi : Lahm will be a top midlefielder

Posted by TB  | No comments

Barcelona star Xavi says Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm can become a "top midfield player" following his positional switch.

The 29-year-old made his name as a full-back but has flourished in a central role since filling in for the injured Javi Martinez at the Allianz Arena, and Xavi believes it has made him an even more formidable opponent.

"Lahm is a top player with a lot of personality, who can play anywhere on the pitch," the Spain midfielder told Sport Bild.

"He seems to be getting even better. He has what it takes to be a top midfield player."

Bayern coach Pep Guardiola added a glowing endorsement of Lahm's transition and firmly believes the Germany international is the right man at the base of his midfield.

"The way Lahm has been playing in recent games, I think it is impossible that anybody could have played any better there," he said.

"In the 1-1 draw with Leverkusen last weekend he completely dominated the midfield. He had 115 touches."

Finally, Lahm himself admitted he is relishing his new role, having played the large majority of his career in defence.

"I love it in the middle, it is a lot of fun."
