Dyke: Wilshere has got to learn

Football Association chairman Greg Dyke has criticised “hot-headed” Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere and says the England international must learn to cope with abusive fans.

The 21-year-old incurred a two-game ban as a result of an offensive gesture aimed at Manchester City fans during his side’s crushing 6-3 defeat against Manuel Pellegrini’s side last weekend.

Wilshere is set to miss Monday’s clash with fellow Premier League high-flyers Chelsea and the Boxing Day trip to West Ham and Dyke fears one of England’s brightest talents will miss more high-profile matches unless he learns to curb his temper.

Dyke told talkSPORT: “As a supporter I sympathise with the players because of the flak they get from the crowd. People can lose their cool very quickly but [Wilshere] has got to learn.

“He’s very well paid to play the game and he’s got to learn to cope with it.

“You think back over many years of players who were hot-headed when they were younger, but not when they get older. They just learn and mature. That’s what happens. It’s part of life.”

Having led the Premier League for the majority of the season, Arsenal could head into Monday's meeting with Jose Mourinho's Chelsea as low as third in the table should Liverpool beat Cardiff and Manchester City win away at Fulham.
