Koscielny close to new Arsenal deal

Posted by TB  | No comments

Arsene Wenger has revealed Laurent Koscielny is close to signing a new contract with Arsenal.

Koscielny has forged a formidable defensive partnership with Per Mertesacker over the past two seasons, and this term the Gunners boast the fourth best defensive record in the Premier League.

The Frenchman's current deal expires in the summer of 2017 but with Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich both linked with summer bids for his services in recent weeks, talks have been ongoing over an improved deal.

"Koscielny is close to signing a new contract," Wenger told reporters on Thursday.

The 28-year-old has made 163 appearances for Arsenal since arriving from Ligue 1 side Lorient in the summer of 2010.

Wenger still targeting title

Posted by TB  | No comments

Arsene Wenger says Arsenal's performance against Manchester City will show they have not given up on winning the Premier League.

Arsenal go into this weekend's Saturday Night Football game now 100/1 outsiders for the title in the wake of a 6-0 hammering at Chelsea and Tuesday's failure to beat Swansea.

The first of those results led to fresh speculation Wenger could walk way when his deal is up this summer, while a 2-2 draw in midweek means fifth-placed Everton are now just six points behind with a game in hand and a home fixture against Arsenal to come next week.

But on the eve of City's visit Wenger made it clear his long-term plans have not changed and said he is entirely focused on bridging another six-point gap - to leaders Chelsea - in the remaining seven games.

"There is no other priority other than coming first," said Wenger. "That is still our target.

"Champions keep going when everybody else would give up. We have an opportunity to show that we have that mentality.

"If people say Everton can catch us then we can catch the teams above us. We have not given up, believe me. It's our attitude tomorrow which will show that.

"It is the next game that is of course very important, and the next game is of massive importance because it is Man City and they fight at the top.

"They are the favourites with Chelsea and Liverpool, but when you play one of the favourites, you have an opportunity to shorten the distance to them."

Arsenal were beaten 6-3 at the Etihad in December but have not lost a league game at home since the opening day of the season, and Wenger said: "We play at the Emirates where we show big strengths and we want to show that again.

"There are plenty of positives to take from the game at the Etihad. But of course we must defend better."

Hill-Wood: Difficult to replace Wenger

Posted by TB  | No comments

Former Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood insists losing long-serving boss Arsene Wenger would be a "nightmare" for the club.

Saturday's Premier League fixture at Chelsea sees Wenger take charge of the Gunners for the 1,000th time, as the Frenchman approaches the 18th anniversary of his appointment.

In that time, Arsenal have won three league titles and the FA Cup four times, as well as reaching the final in both of Europe's major competitions.

Former chairman Hill-Wood, having seen the difficult transition Manchester United are going through after losing Sir Alex Ferguson, feels it will be an almost impossible task to replace the Frenchman in the future.

"I will be extremely difficult," he told The Daily Star. "I dread to think who is coming in. If we were to lose Arsene it would be a nightmare.

"He has an enormous amount of knowledge and has developed a lot of really excellent players who, overall, weren't that distinguished when they came to us.

"Many of them became household names at Arsenal. Thierry Henry is a very good example, also Cesc Fabregas, Patrick Vieira and Robin van Persie."

Wenger is out of contract at the end of the season, but Hill-Wood assured fans there was nothing to worry about.

"I have spoken to [chief executive] Ivan Gazidis and he is very confident that there isn't a problem," he said.

"It's just that he doesn't want to sign up right now, that's all. It's not a question of somebody dangling greater riches in front of him.

"I don't think his enthusiasm has diminished at all. He doesn't think his job is finished yet."

Mourinho: Wenger is a specialist in failure

Posted by TB  | No comments

Jose Mourinho has further ignited his war of words with Arsene Wenger by labelling the Arsenal boss "a specialist in failure".

Mourinho, unbeaten in 10 games against Wenger, was responding to comments from the Frenchman that the Premier League title was now Chelsea's to lose after they went top of the table in midweek.

After Mourinho's repeated assertion that his side are not favourites for the title this season, Wenger suggested that managers who play down their team's chances have a "fear to fail".

But when presented with the latest comments from the Gunners boss, the Portuguese replied: "He's a specialist in failure. I'm not.

"The reality is he's a specialist because eight years without a piece of silverware, that is failure."

Chelsea currently lead the Premier League by a point from Arsenal after 26 matches, with Manchester City and Liverpool two and three further points back respectively.

But Mourinho has been at pains to stress that his side should not be considered the front-runners in this season's title race, labelling them a "little horse" and City a "Jaguar".

Arsenal, meanwhile, are mounting their most concerted challenge in years as Wenger bids to end a trophy drought which stretches back to 2005.

Wenger hails Oxlade-Chamberlain

Posted by TB  | No comments

Arsene Wenger believes Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain proved his capabilities in a central role as the midfielder’s double fired Arsenal to a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.

The England international broke the deadlock in the 47th minute at the Emirates Stadium with a lofted effort after collecting Santi Cazorla's clipped pass.

And Oxlade-Chamberlain, who was making his first Premier League start since August 17, made sure of the points with a low strike under Palace goalkeeper Julian Speroni on 73 minutes.

Wenger deployed the 20-year-old in a central midfield role, and believes Oxlade-Chamberlain can have a future in that position - despite largely being recognised as a winger.

"I always believed that he could play wide and central, he has proven me right today by scoring the goals," the Frenchman said.

"But also the overall quality of his performance. It took him a while to get back because he was injured against Villa."

The win saw Arsenal move back to the top of the Premier League, and Oxlade-Chamberlain was thrilled to contribute.

He told Sky Sports: "It was nice to get the win today, it is always an amazing feeling to score a goal. I've been off the pitch for a while so it was nice to come back and help the team.

"It was a tough game but we knew that in the second half if we kept the tempo up we would get more opportunities and thankfully we did."

Wenger: Arsenal signing unlikely

Posted by TB  | No comments

The manager admits the club are not close to bringing in any new talent, but refused to rule out a late "exceptional" move, and said he is keen to extend Thomas Vermaelen's deal

Arsene Wenger says Arsenal are "unlikely to sign anyone" in the January transfer window, but refused to rule out late activity.

Arsenal have also been linked with recognised striker talent following injuries to the likes of Theo Walcott, though Wenger ruled out a bid for Dimitar Berbatov but left the door open for an "exceptional" opportunity.

"It's looks unlikely that we will sign anyone. We are not close to anything," he told reporters.

"If something exceptional turns up of course we will do it."

Meanwhile, Wenger revealed that he is keen to tie captain Thomas Vermaelen down to longer terms.

The Belgian, whose current deal is set to expire in 2015, has struggled for minutes after falling behind Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in the pecking order - starting just three Premier League games.

He said: "I'm ready to extend Vermaelen's contract. He is a quality player and I'm open to it."

Talks ongoing – Arsenal still interested in €12m Juventus striker

Posted by TB  | No comments

Arsenal manager finally insisted he is looking to bolstering the squad but hasn’t found the right type of player yet. Nicklas Bendtner and Yaya Sanogo both will resume training next week, but Wenger insisted he is still in the market for a striker.

Mirko Vucinic Juventus 2013 2916398 Talks ongoing   Arsenal still interested in €12m Juventus striker

Wenger understands that he will not be able to get permanent moves for the first choice targets in January, hence is looking for loan moves only.

Arsenal were linked with a move for Juventus striker Mirko Vucinic. The Old Lady are willing to sell the Montenegro international, but are not interested to loan him, while luring Julian Draxler at the moment is not possible too.

According to The Mirror, Wenger has claimed that he is not especially interested” in Vucinic, but Italian website TMW are claiming that talks are going on between both the parties.

According to the reports, there was a meeting on Friday between the player’s agent, Alessandro Lucci, and Arsenal over a possible move for Vucinic.

As we reported earlier, Arsenal are thought to be interested in getting the 30-year-old on loan, but the Bianconeri are demanding €12m for the striker. The player’s agent will be in London today to hold further talks.

Vucinic has made only four league starts this season and has dropped down the pecking orders at the club behind Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente.

He would be more than willing to join a club like Arsenal as he would be targeting few games under his belt. The Gunners are also rumoured to be interested in Juventus striker Giovinvo but the player’s agent has ruled out such possibilities.

Henry: Wenger changed the philosophy of Arsenal

Posted by TB  | No comments

Thierry Henry says he hopes Arsenal win the Premier League title this season and claims Gunners boss Arsene Wenger changed the philosophy of the north London club.

The former France international scored 226 goals in 369 appearances for Arsenal between 1999 and 2007, before returning for a two-month loan spell in 2012 from his current club, New York Red Bulls.

Henry won seven trophies in his time in north London, but the Gunners have failed to win any silverware since 2005.

However, Arsenal are currently top of the Premier League table after 21 games and Henry believes this could be the year for his former side.

"I still watch Arsenal a lot," he said at an event in Barcelona. "They have had a great start to the season and I hope they can keep it up. I would be really happy if they won the Premier League."

Henry also paid tribute to former boss Wenger, who signed him from Juventus in 1999.

"He changed the philosophy of the club," the 36-year-old said. "He won stuff as soon as he arrived and therefore he earned the trust of the fans and the respect of everyone."

The striker left Arsenal in 2007 to join Barcelona, where he was part of the treble-winning side of 2008-09 under Pep Guardiola.

Arsenal make contact with Giovinco, but could he replace Walcott?

Posted by TB  | 1 comment

Arsene Wenger may be set to offset the loss of Theo Walcott by signing Juventus attacker Sebastian Giovinco, after it was revealed that the Gunners had made contact with the player’s agent.

The diminutive playmaker has spent his entire career at the ‘Old Lady’, bar a couple of loan moves, having come through the youth ranks in Turin.

Able to play across the forward line, he is known for his dribbling skills and delicate link-up play. With an electric turn of pace and great balance, Giovinco also has an eye for the spectacular.

Still only 26-years-old, the Italian has been primarily used as an impact sub this season, and could benefit from a move away to enhance his credentials in light of the impending World Cup this summer.

Noted Italian football journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has claimed that contact has been made between the two parties, and the consensus is that Arsenal are desperate to find a replacement for the injured Walcott.

Wenger admitted this week that he may have to dip into the January window after losing his England winger,

“[Walcott's injury] has accelerated speculation first and of course my desire as well,” Wenger told the club’s official website.

“Up front we lose Theo as a potential central forward and that’s maybe where we have to look outside, but we hopefully have [Nicklas] Bendtner back in three weeks. We are there for the opportunities but it’s very difficult at the moment.”

Theo Walcott is one of the fastest, most direct wingers around, and he will be hard to replace. But Arsenal have not primarily relied upon out-and-out wingers this season, with the likes of Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey the key operators in Arsene Wenger’s table-topping side.

Giovinco is able to play out wide, but could be utilised alongside Santi Cazorla or Mesut Ozil just behind the striker in a formation Arsenal have used to great effect this season.

The Italian, nicknamed ‘Atom Ant’ due to his size and agility, has not been the most consistent of late, but Wenger may relish the prospect of working with a player so attuned to the style of football being played at the club.

The Metro have claimed a short term loan deal for Giovinco is in the pipeline, and with the player currently stuck on the bench at Juve, and Arsenal’s need for a vibrant attacker to fill a troubling void, this could be an excellent deal for the Gunners if it materialises.

What do you think? Would Giovinco be a good signing? Let us know in the comments below…

Wenger: Rosicky will extend Arsenal contract

Posted by TB  | No comments

Arsene Wenger has revealed that Tomas Rosicky will stay at Arsenal beyond this summer despite his contract having just six months remaining.

The Czech is free to discuss a move elsewhere in the current winter transfer window, but has previously stated his desire to extend his near eight-year stint at the Emirates Stadium.

And Wenger has confirmed he wants Rosicky to remain at the club, and praised the former Borussia Dortmund man's quality.

"Tomas will stay here at the end of the season," the French coach told reporters on Friday. "He is a marvellous player and contributes well to the team.

"He is certainly a typical Arsenal player in the way that he is mobile, technically sound and team orientated. He is a fantastic footballer."

Rosicky has made 20 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners so far this term, and will be in the squad for Monday night's game at Aston Villa.

Cruel Walcott blow won't ruin Arsenal's title chances

Posted by TB  | No comments

A season rich in promise threatening to unravel as a consequence of a ruptured ligament or shattered ankle is a scenario Arsenal and Arsene Wenger are all too grimly familiar with.

While the ramifications of Theo Walcott’s injury might well be devastating on a personal level, the England winger’s cruel setback need not be a terminal blow to his side’s aspirations of ending this campaign with the silverware their football, to this point in the season at least, merits.

Undoubtedly, Walcott’s absence represents a major and unforeseen inconvenience. His ability to stretch defences, intimidate centre-halves with his pace alone, allied to a growing maturity and potency in front of goal, represent qualities far from abundant in Wenger’s current squad.

Before the obituaries are written, however, it is worth noting that Arsenal’s rise to the Premier League summit has been decorated rather than orchestrated by Walcott.

Recent impressive performances, capped by five goals in his last six matches, merely hinted at the possibility of this being a defining season for one of England’s most divisive talents - had a partnership with Mesut Ozil, Arsenal’s assist king, been allowed to flourish it may well have been just that.

The pair have played little over five full games together, however, and have combined only once to goalscoring effect – Walcott’s headed knockdown providing and unlikely assist for the German in last month’s 1-1 draw against Everton. Arsenal simply cannot miss something they’ve never really had.

Though the circumstances and cause of their injuries could not have been more different, it is impossible not to think back to that wretched afternoon at St Andrews six years ago, the injury that effectively ended Eduardo’s Premier League career, and wonder if this Arsenal side possesses the mental fortitude to cope with a not altogether dissimilar setback.

Walcott’s first Premier League goals that day were all but forgotten amid a tidal wave of controversy, a last-minute equaliser and William Gallas’ infamous sit-in protest. Arsenal subsequently allowed themselves to wallow in self-pity, drew five straight games and blew a seven-point lead.

Of that squad, Walcott aside, only Bacary Sagna as well as Nicklas Bendtner and Mathieu Flamini, both of whom have returned to the club following spells abroad, remain.

This is a different, resilient Arsenal. An Arsenal that has coped with injuries to every member of their first-choice outfield XI this season, suffered morale sapping defeats at the homes of both Manchester clubs, coped with a punishing schedule and one that collected more points than any other side in 2013.

This is not an Arsenal that should need to seek comfort in a sunnier precedent but should they wish to the 2002 run-in should provide solace. Though it occurred at a far later stage in the season many still doubted Arsenal’s ability to last the pace when Robert Pires lay stricken on the Highbury turf with a knee injury that was to rule him out of that summer’s World Cup.

In the Frenchman’s place new heroes emerged. Freddie Ljungberg embarked on a goalscoring run that seemed as if it would never end, while Sylvain Wiltord and Ray Parlour struck decisive goals in an FA Cup final and Premier League decider.

In Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Serge Gnabry, Wenger possesses raw gems, unscathed and unscarred by previous Arsenal collapses who are capable of filling a Walcott-shaped void. Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla must accept greater responsibility, while Ozil must begin to justify the demi-god status he has already been elevated too.

Moreover, Wenger must accept that while the January transfer window is an inconvenient time to buy, it is not impossible. Jose Antonio Reyes and Andrey Arshavin were both club record purchases who arrived in previous January transfer widows and although both proved to be far from shrewd long-term investments, both made significant early impacts.

Wenger appeared to rediscover his sense of ambition and adventure in the summer with the purchase of Ozil and a similar roll of the dice this month can ensure that Walcott’s injury does not prove to be the defining moment of Arsenal’s season.

Arsenal prepare £32m offer for Chelsea target Diego Costa

Posted by TB  | No comments

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has a crisis with his forwards after stand-in Nicklas Bendtner sprained an ankle scoring in Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Cardiff.

He will be out for at least six weeks and first-choice Olivier Giroud is also missing due to an ankle injury.

Costa, 25, has a £32m buyout clause in his Atletico Madrid contract and it would be a huge investment for the north Londoners following the £42.5m purchase of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid in the summer.

Brazil-born striker Costa – who last year declared he wants to play for Spain – has scored a staggering 19 goals in just 17 La Liga appearances this season.

Starsport understands Chelsea are also keen on Costa, and were planning to make their move in the summer.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho maintains he will not sign a striker during this transfer window.

Wenger: Arsenal lucky to beat Cardiff

Posted by TB  | No comments

Arsene Wenger conceded fortune smiled on his Arsenal side after they secured a last-gasp 2-0 win over Cardiff City.

The managerless visitors were watched by prospective boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer from the Emirates Stadium directors' box and frustrated Wenger's title chasers as Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere and Per Mertesacker all came close to breaking the deadlock.

It remained intact until the 89th minute, when substitute Nicklas Bendtner smashed home from close range after David Marshall saved well from Bacary Sagna's header.

Walcott burst through the Cardiff defence in injury-time to net a delicate chip and return Arsenal to the Premier League summit following a 3-2 victory for closest rivals Manchester City in the day's early kick-off at Swansea City.

"We needed to be patient against a very good Cardiff side," Wenger told BBC Sport.

"They did work absolutely hard, their new manager was in the stands. They deserve credit and were a bit unfortunate to lose in the end.

"I think we were mature, intelligent and resilient. Maybe it is a consequence of the number of games we have played.

"We know we have to play 10 home games and we want to make this place a fortress and take the points no matter what the others do.

"If we can manage to do that we will be in a very strong position."

Wenger : Arsenal have 'special' mental strength

Posted by TB  | No comments

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that his side have developed something "special" by way of their improved mental strength after watching them beat Newcastle 1-0.

The visitors took the lead midway through the second half through Olivier Giroud and, not for the first time this season, they showed great resilience as they staved off late pressure from the Magpies to take all three points.

The Gunners have consistently been at the right end of the table but have not won the title since 2004 and Wenger feels that they have finally taken a step forward mentally this season.

"There is something in the team that is special on that front, on the mental front, where we have many times been questioned," the Frenchman told the press.

We have shown that at West Ham when we were 1-0 down and we have shown it [on Sunday] with our backs against the wall a little in the last 15 minutes. There is a great solidarity and a great spirit in the side.

"For years we were younger. We have always been up there at the top. This time last year we were out of the championship race but in 2013 we have been very consistent."

The Arsenal boss would not be drawn on whether or not his side are capable of winning the league, though, stating that it is still to early for title talk just yet.

"We believe in ourselves and we are determined to give our best absolutely and to turn back on this season at the end and think we have given our best," he remarked. "I hope it will be enough, of course, but it's a long way to go, it's too early to say that."

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, meanwhile, expressed his disappointment with some of the decisions made by referee Lee Probert at St James's Park but argued that his players could take a lot of encouragement from their performance.

"Really and truly, we've come out on the wrong side here," the Magpies boss claimed. "A few breaks went against in terms of decisions and that was probably the difference.

"There was definitely a foul on [Vurnon] Anita, without a shadow of a doubt. I don'’t want to say the referee had a poor game but sometimes he sees these calls and sometimes they go your way, sometimes they don't. At Stoke we had all the calls go our way and today perhaps we're on the other side of it.

"A lot of my players can take massive players in the way they performed in that game.

"We've got our best players fit - if we can keep them fit for the rest of the season then we can replicate what we've done in the first half of the season, maybe even better it."

Wenger : Ozil is going to miss two or three games

Posted by TB  | No comments

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Mesut Ozil will miss as "two-to-three games" with a shoulder injury that ruled him out of Sunday's match against Newcastle.

The midfielder, who has started every Premier League game since his move from Real Madrid on the final day of the transfer window, damaged his shoulder during the 3-1 win over West Ham on Boxing Day.

Wenger told Sky Sports: "I would have loved him here [at Newcastle] but he had a shoulder problem, he fell on his shoulder. He will be out for two-to-three games."

The Germany international will not feature against Cardiff on New Year's Day and is a doubt for his side's FA Cup third-round tie against north London rivals Tottenham but could make his return against Aston Villa on January 13.

Pardew : Wenger deserves to win Champions League

Posted by TB  | No comments

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew thinks Arsene Wenger deserves to win the Champions League this season.

“I’m very disappointed that I don’t have more British players in my squad. I do want more but I can’t argue with my French contingent because they’ve been absolutely brilliant,” Pardew told reporters.

“Football is a world market and maybe Arsene Wenger saw that before other managers or chairmen. In that respect, we owe him a debt.

“I think clubs can learn from Arsenal. What a job Arsene has done. No-one can ever take away from him what he has achieved, especially that ‘Invincibles’ season.

“I really hope he wins the Champions League this season. I think he deserves it for the career he’s had.”

Wenger shocked by Cole axe

Posted by TB  | No comments

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted he is surprised that former Gunners full-back Ashley Cole has lost his place in the Chelsea side

Cole will miss out against his former club on Monday night when Chelsea travel to the Emirates, with Jose Mourinho confirming Cesar Azpilicueta will start at left-back.

England international Cole has found himself out of favour in Mourinho's plans in recent weeks and Wenger admits he is shocked that ex-Arsenal man Cole will miss out against his old club.

"Yes, it is a surprise to me that Ashley has been left out by Chelsea," he said.

"I still see Ashley sometimes in the big games, he can produce great performances still.

I don't know whether he is still England's best left-back - my name is not Roy Hodgson."

Cole, who left Arsenal to join Chelsea in 2006 in one of the Premier League's most controversial transfers, is facing an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge with his contract due to expire at the end of the season.

Owen slams Ozil : Arsenal have no world class players

Posted by TB  | No comments

Arsenal have no world class players and Mesut Ozil has been far too inconsistent since his transfer from Real Madrid, according to Michael Owen.

Arsene Wenger's side are perched at the top of the Premier League with 35 points after 16 games, though their form has wavered with consecutive defeats against Napoli and Manchester City.

Though he reserved praise for Olivier Giroud, the former Real Madrid attacker ripped into Ozil's performances since arriving in the Premier League and suggested Arsenal will drop off from the title race unless they sign another striker.

"There is little doubting that Wenger's men are now a well-oiled machine," Owen wrote on social networking site Sportlobster.

"The players all know their jobs inside out with Wenger rarely changing his system and against the lesser lights in the league I always fancy them to out-score their opponents.

"It is against the big boys where I think they could struggle as, in my opinion, they don't have the class of player to go toe-to-toe with the main title contenders.

"Despite people constantly telling me that Mesut Ozil is world class, his inconsistency means that we only see occasional glimpses of real quality.

"His odd good performance is usually followed by half a dozen poor ones and despite Giroud performing admirably, unless Wenger acquires a new striker to help share the load, they could just tail off the longer the season goes on."

Wenger : Podolski could return vs Chelsea

Posted by TB  | No comments

Wenger says he takes encouragement from the attacking flair his side showed in defeat at the Etihad.

"Quite amazingly, despite the fact we conceded goals, the match was not all negative," he said. "Because we could have scored six as well.

"On the offensive front, we have shown that we have huge potential.

"I believe that we should come out of that game even stronger in our belief, even stronger in our resolute attitude, because we have shown until now that we can be very strong defensively and, as well, on the day we have shown that we can be dangerous against anybody.

"We can rectify the defensive problem, but that's what we want to show against Chelsea."

Wenger says defender Laurent Koscielny is an "80/90 per cent" doubt for the match after suffering a gash in his knee at Manchester City but forward Lukas Podolski could be involved for the first time since late August, having recovered from a hamstring tear.

"It is a big boost because he can score goals in big games," said Wenger.

"He has shown that before. He is a clinical finisher and a great football player."
