Carles Puyol retirement speech

Posted by TB  | No comments

An emotional Carles Puyol expressed his pride at having "lived the dream" at Barcelona after calling time on his trophy-laden career.

The 36-year-old will retire at the end of the season after a long-standing knee injury finally took its toll on the combative centre-half.

Puyol is a one-club man who won six Liga titles and three Champions League crowns, earning himself a reputation as one of the game's true greats along the way.

Addressing a farewell event held in his honour at Camp Nou on Thursday, Puyol recalled playing football with his brother as a child when such lofty achievements seemed mere fantasy.

"I would never have thought then that I would have this great career," he said.

"I've lived the dream of so many young kids, doing what I most enjoy in life, playing football and training. I've won lots of titles but the most important thing is the human warmth and feeling I take from this club. I came here as a boy and I'm leaving with a family who I'm really proud of."

Team-mates past and present were among the huge crowd gathered to bid a fond farewell to the Spaniard, who has 100 caps to his name and boasts World Cup and European Championship winners medals.

Puyol underlined his desire to be remembered as a wholehearted and committed player, while highlighting the sheer joy of having been able to play the sport he loves at the highest level.

"The one thing I have very clear is that I gave my absolute all for Barcelona and for football and I would like to be remembered as a player who did just that – who gave everything," he said.

"For 19 years I have been able to do what I love. I've won many trophies but what will remain with me is the human side of this club."

He also offered his thanks to the fans and paid tribute to former coach Tito Vilanova, who died last month.

Reflecting on his remarkable career, Puyol chose Eric Abidal lifting the Champions League trophy in 2011 as his most memorable moment.

Abidal, who missed the 2009 final through suspension, had recently undergone surgery to remove a tumour in his liver and was handed the captain's armband for the 3-1 win over Manchester United at Wembley.

"It's very difficult to pick a special moment – but if I had to choose one I'd say when Abidal lifted the Champions League trophy due to everything that it implied," Puyol explained.

"He gave us the example of fighting, he didn't give up and he was with the team and he could live a very special moment, a moment he deserved most than anyone."

Barca can win a 23rd top-flight crown with victory over Atletico Madrid on Saturday and Puyol has faith that his side will deliver, though he will play no part.

"I don't think I will need to give a speech to the squad before the match," he said. "It's a 'final' we have to win and with our supporters on our side, I am sure we will do it."

President Josep Bartomeu described Puyol as "the best captain in the history of the club", while Barca stalwart Xavi added: "Thank you for everything you have given us, for your courage, your bravery, your sacrifices."

Xavi: Puyol taught me a life lesson

Posted by TB  | No comments

Xavi has hailed Barcelona team-mate Carles Puyol as an example to follow as the 36-year-old prepares to call time on his Camp Nou career.

Barcelona held a farewell ceremony for the iconic defender on Thursday, who will leave the club this summer after making over 500 official appearances for between 1999 and 2014.

Xavi spoke on behalf of the squad to thank Puyol for his remarkable achievements at the club at paid particular tribute to his decision to let Eric Abidal - who had recently recovered from a battle with liver cancer at the time - lift the Champions League trophy in 2011.

"We have a lot to thank you for: sacrifice, bravery, generosity. You're the most professional player I've ever shared a dressing room with," Xavi said.

"I'll never forget the final at Wembley when I told you that you should lift the cup, even though you'd only played for a few minutes, and you turned round and said to me: 'No, Xavi, Abidal has to lift the cup.'

"You gave me a life lesson. You've always been there for everyone, for the injured, for those who played less, giving them encouragement and advice.

"I'm so proud to have shared my career with you, and I would love to share a project with you here at the club in the future. You are Barcelona, and the club needs you."

Puyol : Ready to face Madrid

Posted by TB  | No comments

Barcelona defender Carles Puyol says he is ready to face Real Madrid in the first Clasico of the season on Saturday, despite returning from a long-term knee injury only last week.

The Barca captain made his comeback from a seven-month injury lay-off in his side’s 0-0 draw with Osasuna last weekend.

And, although the 35-year-old never featured against AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday, Puyol hopes to be in contention for his first appearance at Camp Nou since March, with Gerard Pique struggling with a hamstring strain.

“Just to return to training with my team-mates and to be feeling good is a great joy for me, so imagine what it would be like to be involved in a Clasico,” Puyol is quoted as saying to Fifa.

“It’s a game that everyone wants to play in. I just have to prepare myself and wait to see what the coach decides.

“During the Osasuna game I felt very good sensations. Afterwards, I had my doubts as to how the knee would react, but in the recovery sessions everything went well.”

Although it is early in the season, Barcelona have gained three more points than Madrid, and a win on Saturday will give the Blaugrana breathing space at the top of the table.

However, Puyol believes the result of the Clasico will not decide the league title.

“There is a long way to go and the league will not be resolved in the Clasico, but it is a good match to gain confidence," he said.

“People speak about the game a huge amount before, [and] after they analyse everything, but in the end it is another game of football with three points up for grabs.

“Madrid are always a team that demands the most of you. They have great players and they arrive with confidence."
