Victor Valdes open letter to fans

Posted by TB  | No comments

Victor Valdes has said farewell to Barcelona in an emotional letter on the club's official website, thanking former coaches Louis van Gaal, Frank Rijkaard, Pep Guardiola and Tito Vilanova for their support over the years.

The shot stopper will leave the Camp Nou side at the end of the season, but will not get the chance to wave his fans farewell on the pitch due to a knee injury that has kept him out of action ever since March.

"The time has come for me to say goodbye to you all. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to say goodbye playing football, as I would have liked, but that’s life at times, and this year has been a bit cruel to me in this regard," the letter reads.

"Thank you to Louis Van Gaal, for showing the courage necessary to gamble on a talent that only he could see. He began building this historic Barca side, which I have been privileged to be part of. My heartfelt thanks

"Thank you Frank Rijkaard, for giving me the confidence necessary, and allowing me to achieve glory, getting my hands on the European Cup in Paris. Wherever you are, I will be indebted to you for the rest of my life Mister.

"Thank you Pep, for having opened the door to playing a game that was unknown to me, for guiding me along the road where one has to keep looking for success, and we did it together, right? We’ll always have that Mister, and believe me, it will be eternal!.

"Thank you Tito! Wherever you are, I thank you for having taught us not only the way to keep winning as a team, but also the strength and character needed to face life.

"Thanks to all my colleagues with whom I’ve had the pleasure to work, that involves wearing the Barca crest on our chests day after day, for making me feel important within the group that we developed over all these years.

"And of course I cannot forget the most important people, over these 12 years as a professional, wearing this shirt, my most loyal fans."

Valdes has made over 500 official appearances for Barcelona since making his official debut in 2002-03.

Valdes : Barcelona don't need a leader

Posted by TB  | No comments

Victor Valdes has dismissed suggestions Barcelona will struggle when he and captain Carles Puyol leave the club this summer.

The pair are both lifelong Camp Nou servants but have opted to call time on their careers with the Blaugrana and some sections of the media have suggested next season will be a transitional one for the reigning Liga champions.

But Valdes insists Barca take collective responsibility for winning games, while backing coach Gerardo Martino to be a success for many years to come.

"I think the Barca dressing room is not characterised by the need to have a leader," he said. "Whenever there has been a problem we have solved it as a group and it will always be. Captains transmit the voice of all the players.

"It would be a wise move to keep Martino for many years. He doesn't just have the years of his contract, he has many more years after that as well."

The Spain international then moved to praise Neymar and says he has the utmost confidence in the Brazilian's ability as he continues to adapt to life in Spain.

"Neymar is very happy, he has everything he could possibly need at Barcelona. I have great confidence in his ability and talent."

Fabregas : Reina can replace Valdes'

Posted by TB  | No comments

Cesc Fabregas has backed Pepe Reina to fill the void by the inevitable departure of goalkeeper Victor Valdes for Barcelona next season.

Valdes is set to call time on his 11-year spell at Camp Nou next summer, prompting speculation over who will succeed the 31-year-old for the Catalans.

The Napoli shot-stopper, who is on a season-long loan from Liverpool, admits to being flattered by being one of the names touted for the position, and Fabregas believes his international team-mate may be an ideal candidate to successfully replace the long-serving goalkeeper.

"Victor has been here for 10 years and none of us can imagine another goalkeeper in his place when we turn and look at our goal," he told Radio Catalunya.

"But one of the things that Pepe can bring is that he knows all of us. He provides a very good atmosphere in the dressing room and is experienced."

Reina progressed through the ranks with the Spanish giants as a youngster, before quitting the club in favour of Villarreal.
