One-year extension for Terry

Posted by TB  | No comments

John Terry has signed a one-year contract extension at Chelsea.

The 33-year-old's future at the club was in doubt as his previous deal was set to expire this summer but the centre-back will now remain at Stamford Bridge until the end of next season.

"I'm delighted to have signed an extension to my contract with Chelsea taking me into my 20th year with the club," Terry told the club's official website.

"I'd like to thank the fans and club for their continued support, and the manager who was instrumental for me the last season."

Chief executive Ron Gourlay added: "We are very pleased John, who is an undoubted Chelsea legend, will continue to lead the team next season, as he has done for so many years with unrivalled achievement.

"Both Chelsea FC and John have been clear throughout that we wanted his outstanding career at the club to continue, and it is important the matter has been concluded so soon after the end of the season, allowing us to look forward to and plan for 2014/15."

Terry made 47 appearances in all competitions under Jose Mourinho last term but could not stop Chelsea ending the campaign without a trophy, with the club finishing third in the Premier League and being eliminated by Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals.

Terry: Mourinho has brought the magic back to Chelsea

John Terry claims that Chelsea have got their old identity back since Jose Mourinho returned to the club in the summer.

The Portuguese left Stamford Bridge in September 2007 after winning two Premier League titles and three domestic cups in his three full seasons at the club.

After coming back in July, the Blues have won twelve of their opening 19 games and lie just two points behind table-toppers Arsenal.

Consequently, Terry believes the club has its mojo back.

"The last couple of years we've lost our identity a little bit," the veteran centre-half told the club's official website.

"There's some good teams in the league and when you go 3-2 up it's important you get men behind the ball and dig in deep and not give them opportunities to really feed on.

"I think we're doing that really well at the moment. At times when we're looking really solid, getting the wide men in and then when we do break it's important for them to then go again and show their fresh legs going forward."

Chelsea are unbeaten in their last four league games, beating fellow title challengers Liverpool 2-1 last time out thanks to strikes from Samuel Eto’o and Eden Hazard.

And Terry says those type of attacking players are key for the side’s silverware ambitions.

"It's important you keep it tight at the back and you look for those type of players to create something or do something out of nothing," the Blues captain added.
